A year in fanom review [2017]
Jan. 2nd, 2018 06:22 pmSome states:
In 2017, I made 28 podfics (of which 3 were multi-voice collaborations and 7 were recorded for #ITPE and haven't been posted yet), four fan fics (one of them is a WIP I will eventually update) and one piece of fan art (for the Sabriel Big Bang)
I wrote a staggering 2650 words over 4 fics (amazing! i know!) and recorded 8h15min of podfic (without counting the collaborations)
Longest?
Podfic: Old Dog at 1:48 hours
Fanfic: the first chapter of Project Rachel at 1253 words/ as a standalone It Was A Living at 777 words
Shortest?
Podfic: here be parker at 1:16min
Fanfic: The snowman knows at 191 words
Most popular?
Podfic: (without counting the collabs) Puppy Issues with 41 kudos and 1552 hits (which doesn't surprise me, since it's a Teen Wolf podfic)
Fanfic: The snowman knows with 15 kudos and 112 hits
Most underappreciated?
Podfic: I know Cisco/Harry isn't even in the top 10 most popular pairings in the The Flash fandom and it's actually my most popular podfic for this ship, but I still feel like Rippled Mirrors deserved more love
Fanfic: It was a living... did pretty well for a minor villain POV in the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest fandom, but I made myself fall in love with Julia and her solo career
Most difficult to make?
Podfic: Old Dog - I've been trying to record it for three years! stuff kept coming up and I had to scrape three versions that I couldn't get more than an hour in.
Fanfic: Project Rachel - the idea had been brewing at the back of my mind since 2016 and it changed *a lot* from what it was originally meant to be. When I finally managed to write this first chapter, I ended up getting stuck on some of the logistics of time travel and bringing someone back from the dead without actually going back and saving her and while getting a bunch of different timelines involved. It started from a very personal place and I've been doing my best to steer it away from there.
Most fun to make?
Podfic: The Revenge of the Houseplants - Good Omens crack at its finest! and something I'd wanted to record since long before I started podficcing. Since before I even knew podfic was *a thing*.
Fanfic: The Snowman Knows - more crack, Sabriel and off-screen consensual use of sexpollen :D
Most "ah ha ha I can't believe I'm doing this"?
Podfic: Eat Me, E. L. James! - smut. shameless smut. over two hours of recording in one single sitting. i lost my voice. Part of me wants to record the whole series, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Also, editing it was... very distracting.
Fanfic: I'm still in awe I managed to write anything after all this time :D But seriously, how did I end up writing a story from Julia's POV?!!!!
Was there one that didn't turn out the way you wanted?
Podfic: I'm still... not disappointed... with my Rivers of London stuff, but I find I'm holding myself to a much higher standard when it comes to narrating these, mostly because I really love the way Kobna Holdbrook-Smith narrates the audiobooks and I'm never satisfied with what comes out of my mouth (also, I seem to be unable to pass off the chance to do a Scottish accent whenever Dr Walid makes an appearance and I really shouldn't attempt any sort of accent)
Fanfic: Project Rachel is still a work in progress and it's so far removed from what I originally wanted from it and I have no idea where it's going.
Biggest learning experience?
I love multi-voice collaborations, especially when someone else does the editing!
