Dear podficcer,

It is once again that time of the year! ITPE is here and it's time to brush off the old letter and tell you what I like. Things haven't changed that much.

Repods are welcome (especially of stuff I've already podficced) and I'd be very happy if you podficced anything of mine.

Basically, my likes can usually be summed up as "people stuck in situations", either physically (stuck in an elevator, snowed in, any kind of forced proximity), or metaphysically (soul bonds, mental links, symbiosis etc) and how they deal with that forced connection. Also, lack of sleep and how it affects the characters (do they crash? do they finally get a good night sleep? do they make bad choices and end up sleeping with their rival?).

I'm fine with any rating and the fic doesn't have to be shippy. I'm generally fine with any archive warning, but I'd prefer it if you avoid anything with major character death or cancer (I'm usually very emotional around that time of the year and I don't want to push it).

Some things I generally like: hurt/comfort, whump, fluff, soul bonds, polyamory, queerplatonic relationships, asexual/aromantic characters, kink (mostly bondage and D/s) especially explored in a non-sexual way, mutual dub-con, sex pollen, non-human biology, tentacles, mind games, hypnosis, codependent characters, self-sacrificing idiots, pining, loyalty, competence, time loops, character study.

Things to avoid (I might like them in certain contexts, but it's safer to avoid them as a gift): hopeless endings, pure angst, things done to characters against their consent while they are unconscious (if the character is aware, you're probably good to go), pregnancy (of any kind) as the focus of the fic, daddy kink, breeding kink, omegaverse, soulmates, reincarnation romance, mundane modern AUs for fantasy/scifi media.

DNW: knotting, permanent character death (especially from cancer),

Fandoms

Venom (comics and movies) - I'm still making my way through the timeline, but I am up to date with the current run (and very fond of VenoMJ), as well as everything between 1984 - 1995 and 2013 - 2018 and I know my way around the rest of it. (Eddie/Symbiote, Eddie/Symbiote/Anne/Dan - for the movie; feel free to mix and match any combination of Eddie/(Anne)/(Beck)/symbiote/Flash/MJ/(Peter) for the comics, or stuff about the Dylan and Sleeper)

Marvel's Midnight Suns - I've been playing this game for a year now and I'm still hooked. It's the 2012 Avenger's Tower vibe I was missing, but Venom is there, too (any combination of characters, any ship, but mainly Iron Man/Dr Strange, Venom/anyone and Blade/Captain Marvel, team fic, hurt/comfort, the usual)

Jonny Quest (any media, but The Real Adventures and the new Dynamite comics in particular) (Dr Quest/Race, team fic, family shenanigans, adventures, Jonny, Jessie and Hadji in any combination, platonic or romantic, any of Race's or Benton’s past relationships, anything really ...just not the one where Jessie dies of cancer)

Iron Lung - I did not have this on my bingo card at the start of the year, but here we are. You can go dark with this one. Hurt/comfort is always welcome, but I'm fine with just the h. No bloodymary, please! Or any crossovers with PHM.

Vampire the Masquerade: Port Saga (podcast) - I look away for two years and there's finally fanfic!!! Back on the list this goes.

Sunshine (2007) - whump and hurt/comfort preferred

The Murderbot Diaries (books & tv, all the found family feels! and grumpy SecUnits! ART! I have a very soft spot for Gurathin in all his grumpy glory. I love Murderbot and Gurathin being weird about each other)

Kane and Feels (gen fic, case fic, fluff, hurt/comfort, Kane/Feels, Feels/Jenny, KaneHana)

MarsCorp (team fic, gen, anything focused on Hob or David Knight)

Down (podcast) (any combination of Team Virgil and the Entity is welcome, lots of tentacles and mind fuckary ahoy!) (yes, I already podficced everything in the tag. I don't mind repods!) (huge soft spot for MarionCharley, regardless of punctuation)

The Kingmaker Histories (podcast) (Eisen/Telesphore, the trio being either platonic, or romantic, shenanigans, Ariadne and Ninette)

Rusty Quill Gaming (Zolf/Sasha, SashaWilde, Zolf/Sasha/Wilde, no modern AUs)

Whyborne & Griffin (Whyborne/Griffin, Christine/Iskander, Maggie/Persephone, or gen + waffles)

Leverage (THE OT3!!!! team fic! competence kink! Eliot's cooking!)

The Flash (Harry/Cisco - I'm back in the Harrisco Pit. I'm staying in the Harrisco Pit for the foreseeable)

Supernatural (Sam/Gabriel, soul bonds, h/c, going back to my roots with this one, 2010s fic preferred)

(Basically, if you don't know what to pick, you can't go wrong with the Leverage OT3, Harrisco or Sabriel)

I really should get back into the habit of crossposting my stuff here, but the backlog is daunting.

This is just a post to remind myself to use this blog more.

Fandoms

Jonny Quest (any media, but The Real Adventures and the new Dynamite comics in particular) (Dr Quest/Race, team fic, family shenanigans, adventures, Jonny, Jessie and Hadji in any combination, platonic or romantic, any of Race's or Benton’s past relationships, anything really ...just not the one where Jessie dies of cancer)

Venom (Eddie/Symbiote, Eddie/Symbiote/Anne/Dan - for the movie, Eddie/Symbiote, Eddie/Symbiote/Flash, Flash/Symbiote, Venom/Spider-Man, Eddie&MJ - for the comics. I am not up to date on the comics, but I know the relevant spoilers and I'm slowly making my way through the whole continuity)

Marvel's Midnight Suns - I've been playing this game for a week and I am hooked. It's the 2012 Avenger's Tower vibe I was missing, but Venom is there, too (any combination of characters, any ship, but mainly Iron Man/Dr Strange and Venom/anyone, team fic, hurt/comfort, the usual)

The Fall Guy (2024) (all the whump!! Colt Seavers (TV) was my original blorbo and probably the reason I'm into half the stuff I'm into, but especially the whump - I want that man to suffer!)

Sunshine (2007) - whump and hurt/comfort preferred

Kane and Feels (gen fic, case fic, fluff, hurt/comfort, Kane/Feels, Feels/Jenny, KaneHana)

MarsCorp (team fic, gen, anything focused on Hob or David Knight)

The Infinite Bad (anything)

The Kingmaker Histories (podcast) (Eisen/Telesphore, the trio being either platonic, or romantic, shenanigans, Ariadne and Ninette - fingers crossed, there's going to be some fun fic to record)

Lockwood&co (TV) (Lucy/Anthony or Lucy/Anthony/George, hurt/comfort or shenanigans)

The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself (TV) (ot3. none of the individual pairings, please. h/c preferred, maybe some light angst)

Rusty Quill Gaming (Zolf/Sasha, SashaWilde, Zolf/Sasha/Wilde, no modern AUs)

Leverage (THE OT3!!!! team fic! competence kink! Eliot's cooking!)

The Mummy (Rick/Evelyn/Ardeth Bay)

Whyborne & Griffin (Whyborne/Griffin, Christine/Iskander, Maggie/Persephone, or gen + waffles)

Jurassic Park (the books and the original trilogy) (Alan Grant/Ian Malcolm/Ellie Sattler,)

The Exorcist (TV) (gimme that good, blasphemous whump and hurt/comfort!)

Guardian (Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan and Chu Shuzhi/Guo Changcheng)

White Collar (the other OT3)

The Flash (Harry/Cisco - I'm back in the Harrisco Pit. I'm staying in the Harrisco Pit for the foreseeable)

Supernatural (Sam/Gabriel, soul bonds, h/c, going back to my roots with this one, 2010s fic preferred)

The first tag I usually check for any new fandom is still the Hurt/Comfort tag - that should tell you what you need. Feel free to smother me in fluff, or whump. However, I generally prefer things to have a happy ending, no matter how dark and painful they get along the way.

Yes: hurt/comfort, fluff, whump, non-sexual kink (especially bondage and D/s), polyamory, team fic, queerplatonic relationships, asexual characters, aromantic characters, non-traditional relationships, explorations of identity, explorations of gender, trans headcannons, lots of fluff, disturbing fluff, mutual dub-con, sex pollen (consensual and enthusiastic use of sex pollen is muchly appreciated, but the garden variety dub-conny kind is also welcome), tentacles, non-human biology, mind games, hypnosis, codependent characters, self-sacrificing idiots, sleep deprived characters who make bad decisions, naps, pining, loyalty, competence, soul bonds, time loops, character study - this is an incomplete and very incoherent list. I like a lot of things.

No: modern AUs for fantasy media, hopeless endings, pure angst, permanent character death (especially from cancer), things done to characters against their consent while they are unconscious, non-con as the main focus, omegaverse, needles being inserted in eyes (eye trauma in general isn't an issue, just very specifically no scenes of needles being inserted in eyes. yes, i am aware of what fandoms i'm in), pregnancy (of any kind) as the focus of the fic, daddy kink, breeding kink, OOC, soulmates, reincarnation

Dear podficcer,

I am very excited to see what you record for me and I am going to try and make this as coherent as I possibly can. Obviously, the moment ITPE signups started, I forgot every single fandom I was in.

Know that the first tag I usually check for any new fandom is the Hurt/Comfort tag - that should tell you what you need. Feel free to smother me in fluff, or whump. However, I generally prefer things to have a happy ending, no matter how dark and painful they get along the way.

I recently had Audacity crash just as I stopped a recording and was about to save the project.
It usually recovers what you were working on when you restart it, so I wasn't particularly worried... Until I was greeted with a text box that said that it recovered to the last snapshot of the project and behind it, an empty project.

An Audacity error message

The best piece of advice for this situation I could find online was to find the temp file for the project and save it somewhere else as back-up. Nothing else I could find (change the extension name from aup3unsaved to aup3 and do the same for the other additional files - by cutting out the unsaved part of the extension - and open it directly in Audacity, or importing the temp file - which registers as an incompatible format), so I saved the temp files and decided to deal with it later.

After stepping away for a few days and spending a few hours playing around with various settings, I managed to recover a slightly damaged version of the recording (it's ok, the damage is mostly annoying)

problem: recording crashes before you can save or export it and when you try to recover it on opening audacity, you're greeted with an empty project
what to do:

Don't exit Audacity!!! you might lose the temp file
Set Windows Explorer to show hidden files
Go to C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData and copy the three temp files for the most recent session to some place else (preferably, zip them together to make sure they won't go anywhere)
Open Audacity
File > Import > Raw Data and import the unsaved project from where you put your copy of it
You might need to fiddle with the settings on import (for some reason, this was saved at 22050Hz and you might need to change Byte order to Default endianness. If you get the rate wrong, you can change that in the project, afterwards)
You're probably going to get one huge file of everything that's been recorded that day, with gaps and glitches between sections of recording
Split stereo to mono and get rid of the channel with the egregious glitches
Export the file in a lossless format
You can deal with editing it later. At least you got your recording back

This is what the recovered audio looked like, before I did anything to it. (Ignore the 32-bit float part. This was an earlier recovery, before I remembered to change it to 16-bit and figured out the ratio)

A glitchy soundwave

Dear podficcer,

It is once again time to dust off last year's letter and try to remember what the hell do I like. I won't pretend I'm writing this from scratch, because, let's face it, I'd just freeze with indecision. (I love this exchange and I will love what you make for me, but I hate having to think about what I like and why)

I hope you already like some of the stuff on this list (or, at least, you're willing to join me in one of my many tiny fandoms).

Know that the first tag I usually check for any new fandom is the Hurt/Comfort tag - that should tell you what you need. Feel free to smother me in fluff, or whump. However, I generally prefer things to have a happy ending, no matter how dark and painful they get along the way.

Dear podficcer,

It's that time of the year again, when we all agonize over what *do* we like and would like our friends to get dragged into with us.

Overall, my fandom list hasn't changed much and I hope you'll find something on it that you also like (or, that I can drag you into one of my many tiny fandoms).

Dear podficcer,

Once again, the time has come for the traditional exchange of podfic! It is lovely to have you here!

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that I've stopped being monofannish this year and I'm back to sampling a variety of fandoms! The bad news is that it's mostly small and nearly extinct fandoms. I'm so sorry!

As always, feel free to smother me in fluff, or whump. A good dose of hurt/comfort doesn't go amiss, if you want to keep things balanced. I generally prefer things to have a happy ending, no matter how dark and painful they get along the way.

The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (Dr Quest/Race, or the trio, or anything really...just not the one where Jessie dies of cancer)
Whyborne & Griffin (Whyborne/Griffin, Christine/Iskander, Maggie/Persephone, or gen + waffles - Deosil didn't bring the abundance of fic I was hoping for, but it's here, if anything comes out after I make this list)
The Tick (2017)
The Exorcist (TV) (gimme that good, blasphemous whump and hurt/comfort!)
Guardian (Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan and Chu Shuzhi/Guo Changcheng)
White Collar (the other OT3)

I'm actually trying to put this together early this year, so I have time to add things to it, if anything comes up (It's mostly the same list, tho)

Hi!
It's almost that time of the year again!
As always, fluff and hurt/comfort are the best kind of fic, especially around this time of year, but my definition of both is pretty wide, so don't worry.

Yes: hurt/comfort, whump, fluff, polyamory, team fic, case fic, fluff, wingfic, fluff, BDSM (platonic BDSM), fluff, coffeeshop AU, gen, curtain fic, crossovers
No: mpreg, a/b/o, darkfic, angst, non-con, character death, cheating (i'm looking at you, BFU fic)

Fandoms:
Good Omens (Ineffable Husbands! pining! cuddles! hot, steamy sex after 6000 years of slow burn! the good stuff :D if we end up podficcing the same thing, I really won't be surprised)
Venom (Eddie/Symbiote, Eddie/Symbiote/Anne/Dan - for the movie, Eddie/Symbiote, Eddie/Symbiote/Flash, Flash/Symbiote for the comics)
Whyborne & Griffin (Whyborne/Griffin, Christine/Iskander, Maggie/Persephone, or gen + waffles - yes, this fandom is small and there isn't much fic, but Deosil is coming out and we might get some new fic!)
Leverage (The OT3)
Buzzfeed Unsolved (Ryan/Shane, Ryan/Shane/Sarah or gen, no cheating fic)
Rivers of London (we're gonna end up podficcing the same fic, aren't we? and it's going to be one by sixth-light, isn't it? :D)
The Flash (Harrisco, Harry/Cisco, Cisco/Harry, Cisco Ramon/Earth-2 Harrison Wells - I've been wallowing in the Harrisco pit for years! have pity on me!!! - Cisco/Cynthia, Cisco/Harry/Cynthia, Cisco/Captain Cold, Harry/Joe, Barry/Len)
The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (Dr Quest/Race, or the trio, or anything really...just not the one where Jessie dies of cancer)
The Mummy (Rick/Evelyn/Ardeth Bay)
The Tick (2017)
The Exorcist (TV) (gimme that good, blasphemous whump and hurt/comfort!)
Guardian (I've only just started watching and I haven't memorized the characters names yet, but it's pretty obvious what I'm into)
White Collar (the other OT3)
Supernatural (Sam/Gabriel - as always)

I'm not sure part 1 of how many this is going to be, but I'll get around to doing a proper post about my editing process at some point.

You know those before and after Photoshop pics? Well, this is something like that, except for podfic. We were having a conversation in the server last night about playing around with volume and I shared a screenshot of a raw recording along with the finished podfic for comparison and then I went through a few more projects, because it looked interesting.

I thought I'd share a wider selection here for anyone curious.

I couldn't go back further than 2017, because any unedited files I have from before then are still unedited.

Here's a short one for a little breakdown

I tend to record each page/screen twice and mark the end with a snap. I count those as takes and any flubs and pickups in between those go unmarked. One page is about 4 minutes unedited and about 3 minutes when edited.
I use the second take and keep the first one as backup in case I mess up a word or there are any background noises I've missed when recording.
Most of the fics I record tend to be on the quiet side lately, so even when I boost the volume, they're not very loud. Still, I try to keep them from going over -3dB.

Here's a longer one (45min), recorded in two sittings.

This one's about the same length, except I had the "brilliant" idea to record it in one sitting. (It's Eat me, EL James! Yes, that's mostly one long sex scene)

This was a much longer one. This took three days to record and eight sittings. It was actually the third time I recorded this fic, but I never finished the first two attempts, because I kept having to change my recording setup.
For some reason, the project for the 6th part glitched and isn't working, but I had it saved in another folder and used that when editing.
Backup your raw recordings as WAV or other lossless formats before you start editing!!!

Here's a few more for the curious

The last one is one of the few times my raw recording was louder than the finished podfic.

After sitting out last year, I settled on one of my own fics for this year's Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology

If you're particularly annoyed by mouth noises in your recording and you really, really want to get rid of them and you have enough patience to go through it by hand, the Repair effect is your best friend in Audacity. I suggest assigning it a keyboard shortcut or using Ctrl+R (repeat last effect used) a lot.
You find it in the Effects menu, under the Built-in section/the first part of the menu (depending on how you have it displayed). Myself, I've made Alt+Z my shortcut for it, because it's easier to remember along with Ctrl+Z for Undo.

I marked a few spots with noticeable mouth noise

When the noise is outside of a word, it's pretty simple to delete it - just do a fade in/out to whatever's next to it to make sure it doesn't sound jarring. Also, Repair helps here, too. Just apply it over the ends that are now joined.

When the noise happens on a letter, it gets a bit tricky and deleting tends to cause more problems.
You'll need to zoom in.

You can only apply the Repair effect over very short segments, so you'll have to go bit by bit until the wave is fixed. (Up to 128 samples or a few thousandths of a second - if you select too much, it will give you an error alert and do nothing, don't worry)

It doesn't always work perfectly, but it can get quite addictive (I have spent half an hour removing two seconds of phone interference from two minutes of recording - I was drunk on power and didn't care it would have been simpler to just rerecord).

You can also use it to turn an R into an L if you ever need that or, in a more practical application, to fix clipped sound waves.

Here's the portion of recording I used for the example. It's the same 17s first with mouth noise and then cleaned up

Also, pressing Alt while using the Draw Tool will give you a Brush Tool which you can also use to smooth out glitches and mouth noises in your recording, unfortunately, since the cursor doesn't appear in screenshots, I have no images for that.

Recorded for

lattice_frames for #ITPE2018

Quick post, bc it's come up and it's something that took me a few weeks to figure out: How to manage sibilants without a de-esser plug-in in Audacity.

The short answer: use Plot Spectrum to find the loudest frequency and then tone it down using Notch Filter. Set Q to around 5-7 for best results.
Slightly longer answer with pictures:

Select the portion of audio that you want to de-ess. Go to Analyze and click on Plot Spectrum (I suggest adding a shortcut for this function if you need it often - which is how I managed to completely forget what it was called or where exactly in the menu to find it before I made these screencaps)

It will give you something like this, except the peaks should stand out more

Hover your mouse over it and it will show you the peak frequency

then use that in Notch Filter (love of my editing life!)

If you use 9 for Qq, it will cut out that frequency drastically. Use 5-7 to tone it down, 2-4 if you need to tone down the adjacent frequency bands.
It also works on lower frequencies, if you have a weird rumble that you can't remove with noise reduction or it's higher than 100Hz and a high pass filter would affect your sound quality too much
